How do you split a PDF into multiple files without installing software? Choose the file, mark the page where each new part should begin, and download the finished files. The same steps split a PDF into two files, into chapters, or into smaller parts that fit under an attachment limit.

How to split a PDF into multiple files

    Once the page count, page sizes and text of every part have been checked, you download one ZIP archive with all the files. The result screen lists each file with its size.

How the parts are named

Each file is named after the original, with “split”, a sequence number and the page range added, for example contract-split-01-pages-1-3.pdf and contract-split-02-pages-4-9.pdf. The sequence number keeps the parts in the right order in any folder, and the page range tells you what is inside without opening the file.

How to split a PDF into two files or more parts

The first part always starts on page 1, and every page you mark closes the previous part and opens the next one. To split a PDF in half, mark only the middle page, for example page 11 of a 20-page document. A split always covers every page in its original order, so no page is lost or repeated.

If the parts should contain only some pages and skip the rest, use Extract pages from PDF. If you only want to drop a few unwanted pages and keep the document in one piece, Delete pages from PDF is all you need.

Splitting a large PDF to send it

Splitting helps when a large scan is over the size limit of an email or of an upload form at an office, a university or an online shop. Personal Gmail accounts, for example, accept attachments of up to 25 MB. Split the document so that each part makes sense on its own, such as the contract in one file and the appendices in another, and send them in separate messages.

Each part carries a copy of the fonts its pages use, so the parts together can be slightly larger than the original. Images go only into the parts whose pages show them, which makes scanned parts large and text parts small. If one part is still too big, shrink it with Compress PDF.

Privacy

All processing takes place in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, and no data remains after you close the page.

FAQ

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. Splitting happens in your browser tab and no part of the file leaves your device. The ZIP archive with the finished parts is also created right in the browser, so nothing is sent to a server.

How do I split a PDF into two files?
On the page where the second part should begin, click “Start a new file here”. You get two files: the pages before it, and the pages from it to the end of the document. Each extra split point adds another part, so you can make three or ten parts the same way.

Can I split a PDF into single pages?
Yes. Click “One file per page” and a split is set before every page except the first, so each page ends up in its own file. The Split PDF into individual pages tool does the same as soon as the document loads, so there you only need to click “Split PDF”.

Will the text stay searchable and selectable?
Yes, if it was in the original. Pages are copied together with their fonts and are not turned into images. A plain scan without recognised text (OCR) only contains pictures of the pages, so search did not work in it before and will not work afterwards either.

Will the pages lose quality?
No. Pages go into the new files unchanged and are not converted to images, so text, photos and graphics look exactly as they did in the original. Only the internal structure of the file is written again.

What if my PDF is password-protected?
The tool cannot open an encrypted file, even one that opens without a password and only blocks printing, for example. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF and choose the unlocked copy here. You can protect the finished parts again afterwards with Password protect PDF.

How many pages and how large a PDF can it handle?
There is no fixed limit. What matters is your browser’s memory: text documents with hundreds of pages usually work fine, even on a phone, but for scans of several hundred MB it is better to use a computer or to split the work into a few steps.

Why do I get a ZIP instead of separate PDF files?
A ZIP lets you download all parts at once instead of saving each file separately. Once you extract it, you have ordinary PDF files with a sequence number and page range in the name, such as contract-split-01-pages-1-3.pdf, so they stay in the right order.

Are bookmarks and form fields kept in the parts?
No. The new files get the page content: text, images, graphics and fonts. Bookmarks, form fields, signatures and attachments belong to the whole document and are not carried over. If your file contains any of them, the tool shows a notice right after loading it.

Does the original file change?
No. The tool creates new files for download and the original on your device stays as it was. If you want to split it differently, click “Start over” and split the same document again at other pages.

Is splitting PDFs free, and do I need an account?
It is free and needs no account. The tool adds no watermark and does not limit how often you use it. Splitting runs in your browser, and no ads or program names are added to the finished parts.
