Online word and character counter
A free tool for counting words, characters, sentences, and paragraphs in text. Paste text into the field above and instantly see the results: word count, characters with and without spaces, page count, and estimated reading time. Everything runs in the browser, so the text is not uploaded anywhere.
When word count matters
An essay has to be 1,500 words. A client wants an article under 500 words. A meta description should stay under 155 characters or Google may cut it off. Word and character counts matter at school, at work, in SEO copy, and on social media. Nobody wants to find out at the last minute that the text is a third over the limit.
Common character and word limits
When writing for the web or social platforms, you often run into character limits. These are the most common reference points:
| Meta description (Google) | 150-160 characters |
| H1 heading | up to 60 characters |
| Image alt text | up to 125 characters |
| Tweet / X | 280 characters |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters |
| Instagram bio | 150 characters |
| Common App personal essay | 250-650 words |
| Reading time | about 200-250 words/min |
These numbers are only guidelines. For school papers, client briefs, editorial work, or platform rules, always follow the exact requirement you were given.
How many pages is it?
Approximate page count with 12 pt Times New Roman and 1-inch margins:
| Words | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 250 | ½ page | 1 page |
| 500 | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 1,000 | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 1,500 | 3 pages | 6 pages |
| 2,000 | 4 pages | 8 pages |
| 2,500 | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 5,000 | 10 pages | 20 pages |
Larger fonts, wider margins, headings, and short paragraphs mean more pages for the same word count. Arial and Calibri fit slightly fewer or more words than Times New Roman.
Difference from Word
Character counts in this tool should be close to Word and Google Docs. If you see a difference, it is usually caused by hidden formatting characters or the way text was copied. For official submissions, check the result in the tool required by the recipient.
What text analysis can show
Word count is only the start. The more useful signals are often:
Average sentence length
Sentences above 25 words are usually harder to read. If your average is 30+, it may be worth splitting some sentences.
Repeated words
If one word appears 15 times in 500 words, readers will notice. Search engines may notice too.
Reading time
An average adult reads about 200-250 words per minute. An eight-minute article needs to earn that attention.
Page count
A single-spaced page holds about 500 words, a double-spaced page about 250. The page estimate above uses these numbers, so you can check a page requirement before you format the document.
Keyword density
The top words table shows whether you are overusing your main keyword. Natural phrasing works better for readers and search engines than mechanical repetition.
What happens to your text
Nothing. The text is counted directly in your browser. It is not sent anywhere, stored, or viewed by anyone. You can use it for contracts, school papers, drafts, or any other sensitive text.
