How to password protect a PDF

   Choose a PDF

   Click Choose PDF or drag the file onto the page. The file is loaded only in your browser.

   Enter a password

   Type the new password twice. It must contain at least six characters, and it cannot be recovered by this tool.

   The PDF is encrypted with AES-128 directly in the browser.

   Check and download

   The result is tested without a password and with the correct password. Its pages and selectable text are also compared with the source.

Encryption used

The result uses PDF 1.7 with AES-128 encryption. The opening and owner passwords are the same, and printing, copying and editing remain allowed after opening. PDF/A files are not encrypted because that would break archival compliance.

What the password protects

The document content, including text, images and fonts, is encrypted. A long, unique password provides stronger protection than the required minimum.

Anyone who knows the password can open and copy the document, so share the password through a different channel from the file.

Signatures and long-term storage

Encryption rewrites the PDF and invalidates existing digital signatures. Protect the file before signing it in dedicated signing software.

Store the password safely. For archives, consider keeping an unprotected copy in secure storage and password-protecting only the copies you send.

Privacy

All processing takes place in your browser. Your PDF is never uploaded to a server, and no data remains after you close the page.
