How do you remove blank pages from a PDF when there are dozens of them? You do not have to hunt for them one by one. The tool goes through the whole document and selects the pages it finds blank, so you only check the previews and click once. It saves the most time with double-sided scans.

How to delete blank pages from a PDF

What counts as a blank page

A page counts as blank when it has no selectable text and its preview is almost completely white: dark pixels may cover at most 0.3 percent of the area. Thanks to this margin, a page with scanner noise, a faint fold line or a shadow at the edge still counts as blank. A page with a stamp, a signature or a handwritten note is not blank, because the dark marks cover more of it. Neither is a page that holds only a page number or a header stored as text. If a small page number is part of a scanned image, though, the page may be selected.

Blank pages from double-sided scanning

Most white pages appear when a document printed on one side is scanned in double-sided mode. The feeder scans the back of every sheet too, so 10 sheets become 20 pages and every other one is white. In a file where single-sided and double-sided sheets are mixed, blank pages turn up at random and finding them by hand takes a while.

The tool selects the white pages as soon as the file loads, so all that is left is a quick check. If your scanner has an option to skip blank pages, turn it on for your next scan. For files you already have, remove them here, and delete other unwanted pages with Delete pages from PDF.

Why the selection is worth a check

The previews are small, so a page with a very light watermark or faint lines can look empty at first glance. Look through all selected pages and untick any that should stay. You can also add a page the tool did not treat as blank, such as a separator sheet with a single word.

At least one page must remain, otherwise the result would not be a valid PDF, so a document made only of blank pages is never emptied completely. Deleted pages are not written into the new file, and the original on your device stays unchanged.

FAQ

Why was a page with a stamp not selected?
A stamp is a solid, dark mark that usually covers far more than the 0.3 percent of the page area the tool allows. A page with a stamp or a signature therefore stays unselected. If you want to remove it, tick it yourself in the preview.

Why was a page with only a page number not selected?
Because the page number is text, and a page with any selectable text is not treated as blank. This is deliberate: pages with a footer, a header or even a single word usually belong to the document. If you really do not need it, select it by hand.

Can I change the selection?
Yes, the selection is only a suggestion. Each page has a checkbox that you toggle with a click. “Clear selection” removes the whole selection, and “Select blank pages” brings back the tool’s original suggestion at any time.

What about a page with only a paper fold or scanner noise?
Such a page is usually selected. The 0.3 percent threshold for dark pixels is set precisely so that a faint fold line, dust on the scanner glass or paper grain does not stop a blank page from being recognised.

Is a scanned page with a printed page number selected?
If the number is only part of the image, only the dark area counts. A small number in the footer covers a fraction of a percent, so the page is selected, but a large number or a full-width header goes over the threshold. If the scan has recognised text (OCR), the number is text and the page stays unselected.

Does it work with a password-protected PDF?
No. The tool rejects an encrypted file, even if it opens without a password and the protection only restricts printing. Unlock it first with Unlock PDF, then remove the blank pages the same way as from any other document.

Does my scanned PDF leave my device?
No. Creating the previews and measuring the white area happen directly in your browser, the file does not leave your device and it is not kept in the browser after you close the tab. That matters for scans of contracts and official papers.

What if no blank pages are found?
Then no page is selected, the “Remove pages” button stays disabled and a message says that no blank pages were found in the document. If there is still a page you do not need, select it by hand and the tool removes it.

How do I remove blank pages from a scanned PDF?
Choose the scanned file and the tool immediately selects pages without text that are almost completely white. Check the previews, adjust the selection if needed and click “Remove pages”. At least one page must remain, and before download the tool checks the count, size and text of the remaining pages.
