Have one PDF whose sections need to go to different places? Learn how to split it into several files or individual pages, extract selected pages and understand what is not retained.
You usually need to split a PDF when one file contains documents intended for different destinations. It might be a batch of scanned invoices that must be saved separately, a contract from which a portal requests only the signed page, a thesis submitted chapter by chapter or a duplex scan with a blank page behind every sheet.
You do not need to install anything or register. This guide shows you how to split a PDF into parts or individual pages directly in your browser, how to select only particular pages and what is preserved. The file never leaves your device because the entire process runs in the browser tab.
How to split a PDF into several parts in your browser
Open Split PDF and follow four steps.
- Choose the PDF. Click Choose PDF or drag the file into the marked area. Previews of every page appear, helping you navigate the document without opening it elsewhere.
- Mark the boundaries. On every page that should begin a new file, click Start a New File Here. The first part always begins with the document's first page, so one boundary creates two files and two boundaries create three. Above the previews, beside Document Pages, you can see how many files will be created.
- Press Split PDF. Pages are copied into the individual parts in their original order and none are omitted. Every page from the original ends up in exactly one part.
- Check and download. The download is offered only after every part has been checked.
The result is one ZIP archive containing all parts. Each filename includes the original document name, a sequence number and a page range, such as contract-split-01-pages-1-3.pdf. A one-page part uses its page number instead of a range, for example contract-split-02-page-4.pdf. The archive is created directly in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

Split PDF
Mark the pages where each new file should begin, then send only the part the portal actually requires.
How to split a PDF into individual pages
If every page should become a separate file, you do not need to mark the boundaries yourself. Open Split PDF into Single Pages. Once the file loads, a boundary is automatically enabled at every page except the first, which begins the first file. Simply press Split PDF. The Every Page Separately button on the Split PDF page produces the same result.
You can change the preset boundaries. If two pages should stay together, such as the two sides of a duplex-printed appendix, click Cancel Split on the second one and it will join the preceding file.
Files made on this page include by-pages, a sequence number and the page number in their names, such as contract-by-pages-01-page-1.pdf. If you keep several pages together, the filename contains their range. When you use Every Page Separately on the Split PDF page, the name retains split instead. The sequence number keeps files correctly sorted in a folder even when the document has more than ten pages.
How to split a PDF into two parts
You need only one boundary to divide a document into two parts. Mark the page that should begin the second part. The first will run from the start of the document to the page before that boundary, while the second will run from the marked page to the end. For a contract with an appendix, click the first page of the appendix and mark nothing else.
If you only need one page, extracting it is usually faster. When a portal requests only the signed page of a contract, splitting would give you a ZIP archive containing every part, from which you would still have to locate the required file.
When you need only selected pages
Splitting retains every page and merely distributes them among several files. If you do not need part of the document at all, another tool is more suitable.
- Extract PDF Pages. Select the pages beside their previews and choose the output: either one PDF containing the selected pages in their original order or Separate PDFs (ZIP), with one file for every selected page. This suits a chapter, appendix or single signed page.
- Delete PDF Pages. This works in reverse: select the pages that should disappear and the rest remain in their original order. At least one page must remain. Use this when you want to remove a smaller portion and keep most of the document.
- Remove Blank Pages from PDF. This is useful for duplex scans. Blank pages are selected as soon as the file loads. A page is considered blank when it has no selectable text and its preview is almost entirely white. The selection is only a suggestion and you can clear it for any page.

Extract PDF pages
Select the pages you need and download them as a new PDF or as separate files in a ZIP archive. Nothing is uploaded.
What is preserved when a PDF is split
Every part receives the complete page content: text, fonts, images and vector graphics. Nothing is converted into images, and every page retains its original size and rotation.
Features that belong to the document as a whole rather than individual pages are not transferred:
- Bookmarks. The parts no longer contain the document outline shown in the reader sidebar.
- Form fields and digital signatures. The form stops working in the parts. Completed values usually remain visible as part of the page, but this is not guaranteed, so open and inspect such a part. The original digital signature does not validate the new files.
- Files embedded in the document. Attachments connected to the document as a whole do not reach the parts.
The document information fields, including the title and author, are not transferred either.
Before download, each part is reopened and its page count, dimensions and text are compared with the original. You should nevertheless inspect the appearance of important pages yourself because the automatic check does not assess it.
The size of split files
The parts may be larger in total than the original, and this is not an error. Fonts and images can be shared among several pages in the source PDF, such as a header logo or a font used throughout the text. After splitting, a shared resource is copied into every part that needs it, which increases their combined size.
The exact resulting size cannot be known in advance. With scanned pages it depends on their content, so separate parts from the same document can differ considerably in size.
If one part exceeds an attachment limit, run Compress PDF on it. The tool tries subsetting supported fonts to the characters used and applying stronger image compression, then offers the smallest result that retains the text. Compress the finished part rather than the full document before splitting so the target applies precisely to the file you are sending. Detailed instructions and advice for a scan that will not fit appear in How to compress a PDF under 2 MB.
Splitting a password-protected PDF
The tool cannot process an encrypted file. This includes a PDF that opens without a password but restricts printing or copying, because it is encrypted as well. The tool rejects it immediately and directs you to Unlock PDF. Once the protection is removed, split it like any other file. If the PDF requires a password to open, you must know and enter it. A file that opens without a password can be unlocked without entering any details.
Frequently asked questions
How can I split PDF pages for free?
Open Split PDF into Single Pages in your browser, choose the file and press Split PDF. The tool is free, requires no registration, adds no watermark and has no usage limit. You do not need to install anything and the file is not uploaded anywhere.
Will I receive separate PDFs or a ZIP file?
Splitting always produces a ZIP archive because there are always at least two parts. On a Mac, double-click it to extract the files. In Windows, use Extract All in the context menu. If you need a single file, use Extract PDF Pages and choose One PDF instead.
Can I split a PDF in half?
You can divide the document into two parts by placing one boundary on the page that begins the second half. Our tools cannot cut one page down the middle, such as separating a scanned spread into two pages. That requires an editor with a page-splitting or cropping feature.
Will the text remain searchable?
Yes. Pages and fonts are copied without conversion to images, so searching and selecting text works in every part just as it did in the original. A scan without a text layer does not gain one through splitting and remains unchanged.
How many pages can the tool handle?
There is no fixed limit. Capacity depends on the document content and the memory available to the device. A long colour scan takes longer to preview than text, and a computer is the safer choice. If the tab freezes, close other tabs and try again on a computer where the browser has more memory.
How can I split a PDF in Windows without software?
Windows has no one-step feature for dividing a document into parts. You can work around this through Microsoft Print to PDF by entering a page range and repeating the process for every part. Opening this page in your browser is faster. On a Mac, dragging pages from Preview's thumbnail panel to the desktop creates a new PDF.
