A statement opens but will not print, or you cannot copy a line from a contract. Learn about the two types of PDF protection, how to remove them and what to do without the password.
A locked PDF can take two forms, and the difference determines what you can do with it. One requires a password before it opens at all. Another opens normally but prevents printing or copying.
An account statement may open while Print remains disabled. A contract may be visible but refuse to let you select a paragraph. A form from an accountant may request a password nobody remembers. This guide explains how to identify both forms of protection, remove printing and copying restrictions, deal with an opening password and protect the document again later. The file and password never leave your device because unlocking happens in the browser tab.
Two types of PDF lock
A document-open password encrypts the entire document. Without the correct password, no reader or browser can display its pages. You see a password prompt instead. Bank statements and payslips often use this protection, with a personal identifier or another agreed value as the password.
Owner permissions let the document open without a password while limiting what the reader permits. Printing, copying or editing may be disabled. This file is encrypted too, but its document-open password is empty, so the reader supplies it automatically.
Both forms can be used together. The document then requests a password when opened and still restricts printing or copying afterwards. If the reader requests a password immediately, the file has a document-open password. If it opens, it either has owner permissions or no protection; a tool must inspect the encryption to distinguish them. Certificate-encrypted files and documents protected by rights-management systems form a separate group. This tool cannot open them; only the software for which they were issued can unlock them.
How to unlock a PDF that opens but will not print or copy
You do not need a password in this case. Open Unlock PDF and follow four steps.
- Choose the file. Click Choose PDF or drag it into the marked area.
- Leave the password field empty. If the file opens without a password, there is nothing to enter. The tool verifies this itself.
- Press Unlock PDF. The pages are copied into a new document saved without encryption. Printing, copying and editing restrictions disappear with it.
- Check and download. The result is reopened to verify that it is no longer encrypted and that its page count matches the original. Only then is the download offered.
If you choose a document with no protection, the tool reports that the PDF is not password-protected and has nothing to unlock. The problem then lies in the reader or in the content itself, such as a scan with no text layer.

Unlock PDF
Remove a PDF password and any printing or copying restrictions. If the file opens without a password, you do not need to enter one. Nothing is uploaded.
How to unlock a PDF that requests a password
If the document will not open without a password, you must know it. Enter it in the PDF Password field. The content is decrypted and a copy is saved without encryption, which then opens without a password. If the password is wrong, the tool reports that it did not open the PDF and leaves the file untouched.
The password is used locally in your browser. Neither it nor the file is sent to a server or written to a log. Your browser's password manager may offer to save it, but that is a separate browser feature.
The tool does not guess or crack an unknown password. Without the correct value, encrypted content cannot be read. If you have forgotten it, ask the sender for the password or an unprotected copy, look for the password rule in the accompanying email, or check the password manager where you may have saved it previously.
Unlocking a PDF for printing, copying and editing
An unlocked file is an ordinary PDF without restrictions:
- Printing becomes available again, including full print resolution. The final output then depends only on your reader and printer settings.
- Copying text works when the file contains real text. Unlocking does not create text in an image-only scan, so such a scan remains impossible to select without OCR.
- Editing and further processing become possible, including adding notes or merging the document with other files.
Unlocking creates a new document. Page content and text remain unchanged, but bookmarks, functioning form fields and embedded attachments are not guaranteed to survive. Order matters: Merge PDF, Split PDF and Compress PDF reject encrypted input and ask you to unlock it first. That includes a file that opens freely but restricts printing.
Is unlocking legal and safe?
Removing restrictions from a document you are entitled to use is commonplace. You may print your own bank statement, quote a paragraph from a contract you signed or attach your invoice to other documents. Owner permissions are technical settings, but the ability to remove them does not grant permission. Copyright, licences and agreed terms still determine what you may do.
Do not remove protection from material you are not allowed to redistribute, such as a purchased ebook, paid report or internal document whose printing was disabled to keep it confidential. If you are unsure, request an unprotected copy from the sender.
The file is loaded only into the browser tab and unlocking runs on your device. Nothing is uploaded, the password is not transmitted and no remote copy needs to be deleted. This is particularly important for account statements, contracts and medical reports.
How to password-protect the PDF again
If the file should be protected when you send it on, use Password Protect PDF. Enter a new password twice and the file is encrypted with AES-128. The password must contain at least six characters and is also used as the owner password. Anyone who knows it can open, print, copy and edit the document because all permissions remain enabled.
The tool sets a document-open password, not owner-only restrictions. It cannot create a document that opens for everyone but merely forbids printing. An encrypted PDF cannot be protected a second time; unlock it first. PDF/A files are rejected because encryption would break their archival compliance.

Frequently asked questions
How can I unlock a PDF without a password?
You can do so only when the PDF opens without one and merely restricts printing, copying or editing. Leave the field empty in Unlock PDF. A file that requests a password before showing its pages cannot be unlocked unless you know that password.
I forgot the PDF password. Can I still open it?
Not with this tool. It neither guesses nor cracks passwords. Ask the sender, check the accompanying message for a password rule or look in your password manager. Without the correct password, encrypted content cannot be read.
How do I print a password-protected PDF?
If the document opens but Print is disabled, unlock it with an empty password and print the new copy. If it requests a password to open, enter that password first. Unlocking does not create printable text from a scan; it only removes encryption and permissions.
Can Adobe Reader unlock a PDF?
The free Reader can open a protected PDF after you enter the password but does not remove the protection. Paid Acrobat offers security editing. Alternatively, create an unencrypted copy with Unlock PDF in your browser.
Does a digital signature remain valid after unlocking?
No. A digital signature covers the precise bytes of the original file, and unlocking creates a new one. Keep the signed original and send it whenever a valid signature is required. Use the unlocked version only as a working copy.
Is unlocking free and available without registration?
Yes. The tool is free, requires no account, adds no watermark and has no usage limit. It works in a supported browser on computers and mobile devices without installation.
