Cannot scan a QR code? The most common causes are weak contrast, missing quiet zone, small size, blurry print, or too much data.
Most QR codes work without much thought: you point the camera and the phone shows a link or action. When a code does not work, the reason is often surprisingly ordinary. It is usually not a "broken QR code", but a problem with contrast, size, margin, print quality, or content.
The good news: most mistakes can be fixed before printing.
1. The quiet zone is missing
A QR code needs empty space around it. This is called the quiet zone. It helps the scanner recognize where the code begins and ends.
If you place the code too close to text, a photo, a border, or the edge of a poster, some scanners may not recognize it. This often happens in designs where the QR code is made to "blend in" with the artwork and the surroundings are too busy.
Fix it:
- leave clean space around the code,
- do not place a thick border directly against the modules,
- do not put it on a patterned background,
- check that print artwork has not cropped the edge.
2. The contrast is too weak
The most reliable combination is a dark QR code on a light background. Brand colors can work, but only when the contrast stays strong.
Risky combinations:
- light blue code on white,
- gray code on a colored photo,
- light code on dark background if the scanner handles inverted colors poorly,
- transparent or gradient backgrounds.
If you need to use colors, follow a simple rule: the QR modules must be clearly darker than the background. Test before printing in normal light, not only on a bright monitor.
3. The QR code is too small
A code that works up close on a screen may fail on a poster or sticker. The farther away someone stands, the larger the code needs to be.
With a small code, the individual squares can visually merge, especially when:
- print quality is low,
- the paper is glossy,
- the code contains a lot of data,
- it is scanned from an angle,
- light creates glare.
The fix is not only "make the image bigger". If the code contains too much data, the pattern is dense. In that case, shortening the content, for example by using a shorter URL, can help too.
4. The content is too long
A QR code can store quite a lot of data, but that does not mean you should put everything inside it. The more data you add, the finer and denser the pattern becomes.
A dense QR code is more sensitive to:
- small size,
- weaker print,
- damage,
- scanning from a greater distance.
If you are encoding a very long URL with many parameters, consider using a shorter link. For long text, it is better to place the text on a web page and encode only the link.
5. The printed QR code is blurry or damaged
A QR code needs sharp edges. Problems appear after poor export, image compression, enlarging a small PNG, or printing on material that makes ink bleed.
Before sending it to print:
- use a high-quality export,
- prefer SVG for large-format print,
- do not save the QR code as a blurry JPG,
- do not print it through an app that automatically shrinks or compresses images,
- test the printed code from the real scanning distance.

6. The link is wrong or incomplete
Sometimes the QR code scans, but the correct page does not open. In that case the problem is not readability, but the content.
Check:
- whether the URL starts with
https://, - whether there is a typo,
- whether the target page works,
- whether the link points to an internal or private address,
- whether characters were damaged during copy and paste.
For URLs, scan the generated code, open it, and go through the whole target flow. It is not enough to see that the phone shows a link.
Quick checklist
If a QR code does not work, check it in this order:
- Scan it from the screen.
- Scan it from the printed version.
- Check whether it has a quiet zone.
- Increase contrast.
- Make the code larger.
- Shorten the content.
- Export it as SVG or a large PNG.
- Test it on iPhone and Android.
If it works on screen but not after printing, the problem is almost certainly size, contrast, paper, or print sharpness.
