How the domain authority check works

The tool queries the public API of Ahrefs, the industry standard for backlink analysis. Domain Rating (DR) expresses the strength of a domain's backlink profile compared to other websites on a logarithmic 0-100 scale. The more quality websites link to your domain, the higher your DR. Because the scale is logarithmic, moving from DR 70 to 80 is much harder than from 10 to 20. Besides authority, the tool also shows how popular the domain is worldwide based on the Cloudflare Radar ranking, built on anonymised DNS traffic of the public 1.1.1.1 resolver, and a quick DNS snapshot: who handles the domain's email and whether SPF, DMARC and IPv6 are set up.

What domain authority is used for

  • Quickly checking the strength of your own website and tracking SEO progress
  • Benchmarking against competitors before planning a content strategy
  • Assessing website quality when buying backlinks or PR articles
  • Valuing a domain when buying or selling a website
  • Choosing partners for link exchanges and guest posts

Domain Rating vs Domain Authority vs Authority Score

Domain authority is not one universal metric. Different SEO tools calculate their own scores from their own datasets, so use them for trends and competitive benchmarks rather than as exact Google ranking scores.

Metric What it measures
Domain Rating (Ahrefs) The strength of a domain backlink profile on a logarithmic 0-100 scale.
Domain Authority (Moz) A Moz model estimating how likely a domain is to rank well.
Authority Score (Semrush) A combined estimate of domain quality from backlinks, organic signals and spam risk.

What is a good Domain Rating?

A good DR depends on site age, niche and competition. A new local website should not be benchmarked against a national publisher, bank or global ecommerce brand.

0-10

New or weak website

Common for new projects or sites without meaningful backlinks. Focus first on technical basics and the first quality links.

11-30

Growing project

The site already has a visible link profile. Track competitors and build links from relevant sources.

31-60

Strong niche website

A good level for local brands, publishers, SaaS projects or ecommerce sites in a specific topic.

61+

Very strong domain

Usually major publishers, known brands or sites with long-term digital PR and many quality links.

How to read the result with other signals

DR alone is not enough. You get a better view when you combine it with popularity, technical signals and whether the site has real audience demand.

  • DR shows links

High DR means a strong backlink profile, not automatically great content, traffic or revenue.

  • Cloudflare Radar shows popularity

A site with high DR and visible popularity is usually a stronger partner than a domain with links but no audience.

  • DNS badges show basic hygiene

SPF, DMARC, email and IPv6 do not measure SEO strength, but they can reveal neglected or technically weak domains.

  • Compare similar sites

The most useful benchmark is against direct competitors in the same country, language and industry.

Monthly competitor tracking workflow

  1. 1 Choose your own domain and 3 to 5 direct competitors.
  2. 2 Record DR, Radar popularity and visible leaderboard changes once a month.
  3. 3 Check who earned new PR articles, backlinks or media mentions.
  4. 4 Pick one content topic or link opportunity you can execute better.
  5. 5 Do not track only the number. Track organic traffic, leads and backlink quality too.

Metric limitations

  • Domain Rating is not a Google metric and does not guarantee better rankings by itself.
  • DR does not evaluate content quality, site speed, conversions or user satisfaction.
  • Fast growth from low-quality links may look good as a number, but it is risky long term.
  • Different SEO tools use different datasets, so Ahrefs, Moz and Semrush scores will not always match.

FAQ

What is Domain Rating (DR)?

Domain Rating is a metric by Ahrefs that expresses the strength of a domain's backlink profile on a 0-100 scale. It considers both the number and the quality of linking websites. It is not an official Google metric, but it is one of the most widely used authority indicators in the SEO community.

Why is the scale logarithmic?

A logarithmic scale means the difference between DR 70 and 80 is far bigger than between DR 10 and 20. Growth gets progressively harder at higher values - sites above DR 70 are among the absolute elite.

Does Domain Rating affect Google rankings?

Not directly - Google does not use this metric. However, DR correlates well with what Google does evaluate: the quality and quantity of backlinks. A site with a higher DR generally has better chances of ranking for competitive terms.

What does "among the top X most visited websites" mean?

It is the domain's popularity according to the Cloudflare Radar ranking, which is based on anonymised DNS traffic of the public 1.1.1.1 resolver. Unlike Domain Rating, which measures backlinks, popularity reflects how often people actually visit the website. Domains outside roughly the top 200 thousand do not show this badge.

What do the SPF, DMARC and IPv6 badges mean?

They come from the domain's public DNS records. SPF and DMARC protect the domain against email spoofing - a missing record makes phishing in its name easier. IPv6 means the website is reachable over the modern internet protocol. The check also shows the email provider and whether the domain uses Cloudflare DNS.

How often are the values updated?

Lookup results are cached for 24 hours and the leaderboard is refreshed once a week. Ahrefs itself recalculates Domain Rating continuously, so values may differ slightly from the paid interface.

Why does my domain show DR 0?

A zero usually means Ahrefs has found almost no backlinks to your domain yet, or the website is very new. Also double-check the domain format - for example with or without www, depending on which version is canonical.

How can I increase my domain authority?

Build quality backlinks: create content worth linking to, publish expert articles on relevant websites, use digital PR and directories with real traffic. A platform like WhitePress can help you get publications on vetted websites.
